Description

The pattern on this unusual dress is based on a block printing technique called Ajrakh, which originated centuries ago and is still practiced by communities of artisans in the Kutch desert region of India.

Using a sophisticated ochre and grey palette, we have reinterpreted the ancient technique through a modern lens. The silk satin is given a modern twist, cut with a high neck and the feminine flourish of a full, gathered pleat on one side.

Model is 5 feet 9 inches / 175 cm and wears UK size 6.

Techniques & Inspiration

'Ajrakh' is an extremely complex, artisanal technique of woodblock printing and resist dyeing that dates back as early as 2000 BC with the Indus Valley civilisation. A living craft, it continues to be practiced in the desert regions of Sindh in Pakistan and Kutch in Western India.

This contemporary bespoke fabric has been designed in Varana's own studio and woven with motifs inspired by the 'Ajrakh' technique.
